Emotionist: Michael TMAD Finney

May 4th 2010 12:30

What is an Emotionist? Well, emotionism is simply this, it is the expression of emotion that inhabits the viewer to feel or connect with the piece that is being viewed..it doesnt matter what medium or even style that you use, as long as emotion is the intended expressive goal. colors usually inhance certain emotions, as well as direction and flowing or jagged lines, depending on the mood that is being shown..

An emotionist is one who practices this style, and or creates work that gives off a sense of feeling in any way..photography, paintings, drawings or even sculpture..if your intent is to express feeling, then an emotionist you are..

Vertigo

This painting is called "vertigo" i was drawn to paint this, because i had suffered from violent vertigo spells until about 6 years ago.

roughly about the time i painted this painting. i wanted to visually capture the sense of helplessness i felt when one of these spells
hit me. my world felt like it was out of control, and i franticly held on to the ground to stop the spinning, yet could not. it would
run it's course, and then go away on its own. i never knew when these attacks would hit me, so i was always at a disadvantage.
i felt it had alot to do with my ears, thus, you see know ears on the figure at hand. if you look closely, you can see faces in the shoulder
of the figure.. slowly losing control and balance. as well as the cracked, grey shaded eye. for my vision is what caused me to feel
like i was rocking and spinning about. so this was my reason and purpose for the painting.

But, many have viewed this painting, and the word vertigo strikes them as losing control of there lives. how one's life can spiral out
into something they cant maintain. so they too, hold on in a frightened daze. thus, connecting with this painting in ways that i
at first did not intend.

Yet, this is what gives emotionism it's power. the power of connection through means of vague symbolism,
or symbols that can mean more then one thing to different people. i find it fancinating all the different emotionists out there,
that dont even realize that they are emotionists.

I feel that emotionism is due to the way todays society is able to express themselves more freely. and are impelled to pour there feelings onto the canvas or any other medium that allows them to. I invite you to see more of my artwork portfolio.
