Mitchell Iliff
Well, let’s see, where do I begin? Let’s start with the beginning of my art career. When I was in Elementary school my teacher’s told my parents to encourage my art ability. It was apparent to all that I had a natural gift in the arts which included painting, drawing, and sculpture.
When I got into middle school my 7 th grade teacher had me do the murals for every open house. I loved doing the murals because I thought them as an artistic adventure. My teachers recognized my ability throughout middle school. I was always encouraged to go further and do more and to expand my work to all forms of art.
When I reached college I majored in art and minored in music. I began with drawing classes. I loved drawing still life pieces. I later went on to life drawing, painting, and sculpting. I got excellent grades throughout my college years
I began playing steel Guitar when I was in 3 rd grade. I later abandoned the steel guitar and began playing the Alto Saxophone while I was in 5 th grade. I was first chair playing my alto saxophone in middle school. While I was in High School I was fortunate enough to learn the Tenor Saxophone. I was also very fortunate to be the Assistant Drum Major in my junior year of High School. When I graduated from High School, which I did with honors, I taught myself how to play the Flute and a year later I had learned how to play the Piano. I began writing all original music and lyrics. I was determined to be a recording artist and I let my painting and sculpting go on the back burner.
After several years of performing and hoping to get discovered I also went to cosmetology school. I really didn’t think I would make a career out of doing hair but I began making more money and I put all my art endeavors on hold. After 31 years as a cosmetologist I retired due to a serious shoulder injury. I had been trying to rekindle my art career as a painter and sculptor during the last 10 years.
Now retired and disabled I have put my art work above anything else I do. I take beautiful things and with the help of our wonderful god, I grow pretty flowers on my balcony and meet lots of people who model for me. My art work reflects many different artistic styles. Each style represents a different mood and allows me to express my emotional personality in a variety of ways. I try to make that emotional contact between me and my art whether in the form of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography. Expressing your self artistically is the highest form of expression.
I am also a photographer. I love taking pictures of the lovely flowers, friends and the natural world. I use all kinds of media to get the right emotion for each piece. Much of my photography reflects my world travels which I would like to share with the world.
