Broad Lighting has a major role to play in making the photography better. Among all the different kinds of lights used, broad light has a distinct stand.

Broad lighting is used to illuminate the larger portion of the face that is set visible to the camera. This kind of lightning, as the name hints itself, is used to present the things in a better and boarder prospect.

Broad lighting is known to be the main light which is positioned in a way that it lights up the side of face and is turned towards the camera. This technique is mainly used for remedial purposes, where the subjects are made to look better, so as to improve the overall photography. This will de-emphasize the facial features. This kind of light is a boon to those who have narrow and smaller faces and want them to get highlighted as boarder ones.

This kind of portrait lightning photos makes the faces appear wider as they act to be the main light source, to highlight the side of the face and closes it to the camera.

To fulfill the broad lighting function, one has to make an apt set up, which is just the opposite of short lighting. Bring the main light close to camera axis. Check that the light must fall on the side of the subject's face, which is set closest to the camera. Make the subject to turn his/her head away from the key light. It will expose a major proportion of the face area to the camera.

For broad lighting photography, the catch light is set in the 11 o'clock position whereas the main light for short lighting must create the catch light set at the 1 o'clock position. This will help the photographer to click better pictures, making the subject look enhanced.
