As I watched this little girl play with her mother at the beach, I was captivated by the sun in her radiant red auburn hair…together with her polka dot bathing suit she was a gem to behold.
In this portrait, my goal was to portray transcendence of time, capturing the tender bond between father and child. I painted this 18x 24 portrait for my sister, striving to bring back a moment in time for her to cherish for many years.

Bio:
My fascination with art began with a blue ribbon in a first grade painting contest. I was completely oblivious to having been entered ! It’s amazing how far a little encouragement can take you. Spurred on by small accolades throughout the years, I ended up a 1992 graduate of Maine College of Art (which back then, was known as Portland School of Art). As a photography major, painting was… “messy” … and only the “crunchers” painted. We photo students, along with the graphic designers, were the “clean” crowd. I never touched a paintbrush in all my four years.
Post graduation, I spent a short time in disillusionment with the art world and its potential for pretension and superficiality. There was a definite emotional disconnect. Working briefly in photography before starting a very busy family, I saw my artistic endeavors put on hold for the next several years.
Upon meeting new friends who reintroduced me to the world of art with a new and added appreciation for God’s creation, I began to see “the canvas” (or in my case…the 140 lb. watercolor paper) in a totally new and refreshing light. With many attempts at various mediums, I finally found watercolors to be one of my favorite modes of expression (though I do also enjoy colored pencils and pastels). Portraiture has been my mainstay since the first grade painting encounter( a little girl in a baseball hat).
I find the human face amazing with all its subtle nuances of color and form. I desire to capture that quirky smile…that sparkly twinkle in the eye, which makes each subject so delightfully unique. As inherent to the art form, and as I strive to interpret your loved ones on the painted page, the portrait evolves into its own translation. Not even the finest of painters can portray their subject in complete exactitude. If exactitude is the goal, the photograph should be the medium of choice. My desire is to give each client a beautiful memory to repeatedly ponder and cherish. I hope you enjoy my work as you visit my website.
