LINNEA TOBER- ARTIST STATEMENT
We are all creative beings, artists. Every one of us has the innate desire to express what is inside of us. For as long as I can remember I have been painting, photographing my world, writing, dancing, singing; they have all been significant parts of my life. Without them I would have shriveled away long ago. Bold colors, unique textures and objects consistently find their way into my life and my artwork. I paint and photograph what is around me, but using a unique angle, extremely close-up, upside-down, whatever it takes to get the scene I desire. I believe the true artist moves to get the shot, they do not wait for the shot to ‘happen’, they make it happen, they create it.
I enjoy playing with colors and making bold statements with my work. My art is therapeutic; it is healing, it is a pure reflection of my mind and soul. I enjoy when someone tells me they never would have looked at something they way I did, that is a true compliment and the artist job, to create ideas and images that others would not have seen on their own! Creating is the truest form of being human. It is what separates us from other animals. When we make something with our own two hands, our self-esteem and pride are lifted. Our desire to express what is in our hearts and souls is the basis of being a human being.
My paintings, digital works and black and white photography focus on women, nature, and the intricate textures, shapes and beauty in the everyday. I take these natural images/still life set-ups, and transform them into what I see, to make them my own. I think of it as working with nature, rather than against her. The shadow of a leaf, the stark and bare tree branches covered in ice, a profile in shadow, broken cement statues, this is beauty to me.
